The artist and the practice
Studio
A contemporary practice where watchmaking, drawing, handwriting, paper and gold leaf meet.
A practice of time and material
The hand gives time a surface.
Studio is the name for Mauro Carraro’s personal practice: a place for original works, bespoke commissions, live drawing and long conversations between memory, precision and material.
Ground
Paper, prepared grounds and relief establish a surface before the drawing begins. They give the work a physical depth that stays close to the hand.
Line
Blue ink can hold a contour or open into a wash. Mauro uses diluted fountain-pen ink for chiaroscuro, alongside handwriting and the observation of faces, mechanisms and imagined forms.
Leaf
Gold leaf enters sparingly, through an ongoing research into water gilding, burnishing and a contemporary blue reading of historic techniques.

Savoir-faire
A vocabulary built through practice.
The work draws from watch culture, sustained handwriting practice and paper-gilding research. In 2026, Mauro completed a personalised course in paper gilding, water gilding, gesso relief and burnishing at Palazzo Spinelli in Florence, alongside his independent material research.
Each work remains resolutely contemporary: an encounter between the patient disciplines of craft and a personal, graphic language in blue ink and gold.
Material research
Bolo Blu:
a ground in development.
After an individual course in paper gilding in Florence in 2026, the studio began an ongoing research into a blue preparation for water gilding. It is a personal chromatic development of traditional Armenian bole, approached as a contemporary material language rather than a fixed recipe.
The research brings preparation, surface and reflection into the same conversation as drawing. Each test remains a study in process: a way to understand how colour, relief and leaf can hold light on paper.
Context
A personal language, in dialogue with maisons.
Original works, live drawing and material collaborations have brought the studio into conversation with the worlds of watchmaking, hospitality, fragrance and print. Each project begins with the same attention to line, presence and the object held in the hand.
Mauro Carraro is an FHH-certified Watch Advisor and Watch Specialist. Watch culture is not a decorative reference in the work; it is a studied language of precision, proportion and time.
Formation
A line carries a history.
Alongside the present studio practice, Mauro Carraro maintains an independent career in animation filmmaking. His experience in direction and motion design also informs his attention to framing, rhythm, sequence and the drawn gesture.

Mauro Carraro is an artist and animation filmmaker based in Geneva. Through Blue Ink & Golden Leaves Studio, he makes original works on paper, portraits and bespoke commissions. Letter to Time is at the centre of his present practice. A dial, a movement or the architecture of a tourbillon can shape the composition; handwriting may address the timepiece or become part of the image.
Blue ink carries both the construction of the object and the movement of the handwriting. A precise contour can deepen into shadow or spread into a wash. Gold leaf catches light at selected points; in works such as Atmos, white lettering can be the paper itself, protected before the ink is applied and revealed afterward. The surface holds several kinds of detail, inviting the eye to move between the whole image and the marks from which it is made.
In Atmos, letters and constellations draw the clock into a wider astronomical scene. The work has also led Carraro back to study. An FHH-certified Watch Advisor and Watch Specialist, he studies horology alongside handwriting and gilding. His work with David Grimes explores consistency in recurring words and titles; traditional gilding training in Florence and subsequent research examine the prepared surface beneath the leaf.
Portraiture brings this attention into an encounter. In live sessions, observation, conversation and drawing unfold while the sitter is present. Commissioned work asks for other scales and uses. For Montblanc, Carraro has made portraits, watch imagery and hand-drawn illustrations of personalised nibs. For Floraïku’s Sand And Skin, an original composition became an image for a perfume bottle cap. These are different responsibilities for drawing: attending to a face, describing an instrument, or carrying an image onto an object.
Carraro co-directed Matatoro with Raphaël Calamote and Jérémy Pasquet, and directed Hasta Santiago, Aubade, 59 secondes and Baroudeur. A pilgrimage, a dawn concert on Lake Geneva, memories of the Friuli earthquake and the life of a friend become distinct worlds through computer-generated animation. Watercolour-like treatment, engraving and graffiti-like surfaces give the films different visual registers.
Hasta Santiago received Annecy’s Prix Jean-Luc Xiberras de la première œuvre in 2014; 59 secondes received the Pardino d’argento at Locarno in 2017. Hasta Santiago and Aubade were nominated for the Swiss Film Award. Masterclasses, festival juries and exhibitions of production material extend this filmmaking career beyond the screen.
Transmission
A technique stays alive when it is passed on.
Live sessions and workshops are not an aside to the studio. They are where the tools, the material and the attention behind the work can be shared directly — through a bespoke portable atelier, demonstrations and carefully guided making. Explore workshops

A practice in the world.
