An excerpt from the letter

“Two inclined tourbillons. One at twelve o’clock. One at six. Two hearts facing each other through a body made of sapphire.”

“Perhaps this is my own differential. Blue ink on one side. Gold leaf on the other.”

Created in 2026 within Letter to Time, ArtyA Complexity is a unique diptych in blue ink and grey 18K gold leaf.

Across two 56 × 76 cm sheets, the drawings hold a dialogue between watchmaking form, handwritten letter and reflective leaf. Johann Sauty’s studio photographs record the work in progress for this presentation.

Read the material notes

Blue ink moves between two related drawings, carrying watchmaking architecture into a handwritten field. From a distance, the pair reads as one balanced presence; at close range, each sheet keeps its own rhythm.

Gold leaf is present as matter rather than printed colour. Its visibility changes with light and viewpoint: at one angle it can recede into the paper; at another, it interrupts the blue with a reflective flash. The surface therefore asks the viewer to move, revealing something a single fixed photograph cannot fully retain.

That tension—between disciplined line, handwritten time and unstable reflected light—forms the material grammar of this Letter to Time.
